Heritageisourlegacyfromthepast,whatwelivewithtoday,andwhatwepassontofuturegenerations。Ourculturalandnaturalheritagesarebothirreplaceablesourcesoflifeandinspiration。PlacesasuniqueanddiverseasthewildsofEastAfrica’sSerengeti，thePyramidsofEgypt，theGreatBarrierReefinAustraliaandtheBaroquecathedralsofLatinAmericamakeupourworld’sheritage.

WhatmakestheconceptofWorldHeritageexceptionalisitsuniversalapplication.WorldHeritagesitesbelongtoallthepeopleoftheworld,irrespectiveoftheterritoryonwhichtheyarelocated。

TheUnitedNationsEducational，ScientificandCulturalOrganization(UNESCO）seektoencouragetheidentification，protectionandpreservationofculturalandnaturalheritagearoundtheworldconsideredtobeofoutstandingvaluetohumanity。ThisisembodiedinaninternationaltreatycalledtheConventionconcerningtheProtectionoftheWorldCulturalandNaturalHeritage,adoptedbyUNESCOin1972。

TheEiffel

TheEiffelTowerisalandmarkofmodernEurope，thedesignofFrenchengineerAlexandreGustaveEiffelfortheParisInternationalExhibitioninthelate19thcentury.Thetoweris984feethighandconsistsofanopenironframeworkonfourmasonrypiers.Thepierssupportfourcolumnsthatcometogethertoformtheshaftofthestructure。EiffelalsowastheengineerfortheframeoftheStatueofLiberty。

Eiffelwasnotapopularmanwhenhestartedbuildingthehugesteel-frametowerthatwouldoverlookParis。Thestructurewasjusttoodifferentandthecriticsdidn’tlikeitatall。In1887,theleadingartistsofParissignedapetitiontohavewhattheyregardedasamonstrositytorndownimmediately.

FortunatelyforParis,theircallwasignored.AndthoughParisiansdidn’tlikeitatfirst,theybegantogrowfondofthestructuretheyinitiallycalleda“cyclopsanda“skeleton”.
