TheSpecialOlympicsWorldGamesgivechildrenandadultswithintellectualdisabilitiesachancetoshowtheirskillstotheworld.TheyincludemanyeventssimilartothoseintheOlympics,suchasbasketball,footballandswimming.

Over40,000peoplegaveuptheirsparetimeforthe2007SpecialOlympicsWorldGames.Itwasnecessaryforthesevolunteerstoreceivetrainingbeforedoingthetasks.Thentheyprovidedsupportfortheathletesandhelpedmaketheeventagreatsuccess.

“IwastheswimmingcoachforayoungboyfromNorthChinacalledLiHai,”saysLiu

Ming.“Hewasbornwithintellectualdisabilities.Itwasverybraveofhimtojointhecompetition.ToLiHai,themostimportantthingisnottowinagoldorasilver,buttotakepart.LiHaitriedhisbestandfinishedfourth.HefeelsmoreconfidentnowbecauseoftheSpecialOlympicsWorldGames.

TheSpecialOlympicsWorldGamesalsobringpeopletogether.Athletesandvolunteersfromdifferentbackgroundsfeellikepartofonebigfamily.“It’sgreatforustoworkcloselywiththesespecialathletes.Yougettohelpthemachievetheirdreams,”saysLiuMing.
