Establishedin1963,Wolongisthecountry’searliestpandareserve.Itexperiencedserioushuman-animalconflict,suchasillegalloggingandhuntingbeforethe1990s.In1978,anobservationtent,claimedtobethecountry’sfirstfieldcamptostudywildgiantpandas,wasbuiltonasteepforestedslopeinthereserve.

Intheearly1980s,thegovernmentcooperatedwiththeWorldWideFundforNaturetoestablishtheChinaConservationandResearchCenterfortheGiantPandatosavetheendangeredanimal.

Attheverybeginning,itwasreallydifficultforrangers.Withnoproperoutdoorequipment,likeprotectivejacketsorsleepingbags,everytime,goingaroundtheareacouldbealife-threateningadventure.Plasticwovenbagswerecommonlyusedforwarmthandasmakeshifttentsforemergencycases.ForShi,therealchallengesarenaturaldisasters,whichcannotbepredicted.
