Thereareanumberofspecialdaysoftheyearthatarecelebratedindifferentcountries.Theoriginsofmostofthedaysareunknown.Theywerecertainlynotcreatedbyindividualpeople.Otherdays,however,especiallythosecelebratedinwesterncountries,oftenowetheiroriginstoaparticularperson.Oneofthemostpopularofthese,eventhoughitisfairlyrecent,isMother’sDay.Mothershavealwaysbeenhighlyregardedinallcultures.TheancientRomanshadafestivalknownasHilaria,duringwhichchildrentookpresentstothetempleofthe“MotheroftheGods”.TheChristianChurchadoptedthisideaandcalleditMotheringSunday.However,overtheyearsthiscustomwasgraduallyforgottenandalmostdisappearedbytheendofthe19thcentury.

Bornin1864inVirginia,USA,AnnaJarviswasaschoolteacherandbelievedchildrenshouldshowgratitudetotheirmothersforalltheirloveandcare.Encouragedbyafriend,shewrotetothousandsofimportantpeople—politicians,churchmen,doctors,cityofficials—andaskedthemtosupportheridea:aspecialdayoftheyearforthankingmothers.

In1910theGovernorofWestVirginiaintroducedMother’sDayintothestate.ThedatechosenwasMay10—thesecondSundayinMay,whichisstillobservedinAmericatoday.ThisdatewaschosenbecauseMay10wasthedateonwhichin1908AnnaJarvis’smotherhaddied.In1914PresidentWoodrowWilsonmadeMay10theofficialdateforMother’sDaythroughouttheUnitedStates.

SoontherewasaMother’sDayInternationalAssociationandthecustombegantobeadoptedinmanycountriesoftheworld.

AnnaJarvis,asadanddisillusioned(失望的)woman,diedin1948.Thecustomshehadworkedsohardtoestablishandwhichhadbecomealmostuniversalhadlostitsoriginalpurpose.Ithadbeentakenoverbybusiness.LikeChristmas,thegivingofpresentsandthesendingofcardshadbecomea
