Wet-bulbtemperaturemightsoundlikethe“heatindex”—thatis,whenyourlocalweatherpersonsays,“It’s90degrees,butit’sgoingtofeellike98becauseofhumidity”—andtherearesimilarities.Buttherearealsocriticaldifferences.

Theheatindexassumesyou’reintheshadeandresting,butbeingindirectsunlightcanadd15degreestotheheatindex.Onewaytounderstandthevalueofusingwettemperaturesistolookatmapscomparingthemwiththemorefamiliar“dry”temperatures.TakeFresno,Calif.,whichisforecast-toreach102degrees.Buthumidityislow,sothecorrespondingwet-bulbtemperatureis80.NewYorkCity,forcomparison,isforecasttobe98,buthumiditywillbehigh,puttingthewet-bulbtemperatureat88—andmakingconditionsevenmoredangerousthaninFresno.
