Whilewalkingthroughafamousschool,Ioverheardaconversationbetweenapreschoolteacherandheryoungstudent.“Donotstepontheants,”shewarned,“weshouldn’tkillants.”Theteacher’sintentionwasclear:todevelopasenseofsympathyandrespectforalllivingbeings.Butwhathappenswhenthischildgoeshomeandwitnesseshismumusingantspray?Isitpossiblethatwe’reconfusingourchildrenwithmixedmessages?Thisdichotomycallsintoquestiontheapproachofteachingyoungchildreninabsolutes—ofrightandwrong,do’sanddon’ts—whentheworldtheywillgrowupinisenrichedbycontext,slightdifferences,andthemanyshadesofgrayinbetween.Thisseeminglyharmlessexampleuncoversthecomplexityofmoralteachingsintheformativeyears.Teachingchildrenthroughabsoluteconceptscaneasilyleadtoblack-and-whitethinking.Inpsychology,thisisknownas“all-or-nothing”cognition,whichnarrowscomplexrealitiesintooversimplifiedextremes.Whilethisformofthinkingmightmakeideaseasiertograspforyoungminds,itriskscreatingcognitiveproblemslaterinlifesuchasanxiety,depression,orstress,resultingfromtheinabilitytocometotermswiththecontradictionsandcomplexitiesthatlifeunavoidablypresents.Ratherthanteachingabsoluteprinciples,encouragingchildrentoconsidercontextismorebeneficial.Forinstance,inthecaseoftheantproblem,theteachercouldengagethechildinadialogue:“Whydoyouthinkitmightbewrongtosteponants?Canyouthinkofanysituationswhereitmightbenecessary?”Thisconversationcanleadtodiscussionsaboutthesanctityoflife,theimportanceofcoexistence,andthepracticalaspectsofhealthandcleanliness.Suchconversationspreparechildrenforthesituationstheymightencounterlater,allowingthemtomakebetter-informeddecisions.
