PhysicalInstabilitiesinFSI
Itiswellknownthatsomeproblemsinvolvingfluid-structureinteractionsexhibitphysicalinstabilities.Hence,itisimportanttostudythebehaviorofsystemsusingonlynumericaltechniquesthatcanaccuratelyresolvesuchinstabilities.Moreimportantly,solutionmethodsshouldnotintroducenumericalinstabilitiesthatcouldbeconfusedwiththeactualphysicalphenomena.InthisBrief,wepresenttwoexamples.Thefirstexampleinvolvesfluid-structureinteractionsinalid-drivencavitywithaflexiblebottom.ThesecondexampleshowshowADINAFSIcanbeusedinfluid-structureinteractionproblemsinvolvingphysicalinstabilities(e.g.,flutter).
Figure1showstheschematicofthefirstexample.Anopencavityisconfinedwithrigidverticalwallsandaflexibleplateatthebottomandisdrivenbyaharmonichorizontalvelocityappliedatitstop(seeRef.[1]).Thedetailsofthemodelaredepictedinthefigure.Forasimilarproblem,seeRef.[2]andtheobservationsinRef.[1].Figure1?Schematicofthelid-drivencavityproblem
Whilethetime-varyingresponseisrequired,theproblemisinitiallysolvedforthesteady-stateresponsecorrespondingtothemaximumvelocityloading(Figure1).TheobjectiveofthispartofthestudywastoobtainagoodmeshusingtheadaptivemeshingcapabilityofADINACFD.Theadaptivelyreachedmeshisthenusedforthetransientdynamicsolution.Theresponseofthesystemisalsoanalyzedusingauniformgridof120X120,4-nodeFCBIelements.Resultsofthetransientanalysisusingtheadaptivelyreachedmeshandtheuniform4-nodeelementmesharecomparedinFigures2and3.Inallanalysestheflexibleplateatthebottomwasmodeledusing2-nodeisoparametricplanestrainbeamelements.
