Consciousnessisaconceptthatisfiendishly(非常地)difficulttodefine.Therehavebeenmanyattempts:isitawareness,orawarenessofthatawareness,orself-awarenessinstead?Butausefulworkingdefinitionmightbethatitisanykindofsubjectiveexperience,rangingfromhowweperceivetheexternalworldtoourinnerthoughtsandemotions.

Animalsdifferintheirscoresforeachofthesefacetsofconsciousness.Membersofthecrowfamily,forexample,canbeskilledatlearningfrompastexperiences.Bothoctopusesandbeesappeartoenjoyplaying,suggestingtheycanexperiencepleasure,linkedtotheabilitytofeelthedifferencebetweengoodandbad.Thenumberofanimalsthatpassthefamousmirrortest–showingthattheyunderstandthattheanimalinthemirroristhem,andthustheyhaveasenseofselfhood(自我意识)–isever-growingandincludessomefishbutnotdogs.

FindingslikethispromptedagroupofscientistsinApriltowriteTheNewYorkDeclarationonAnimalConsciousness,whichnowhasover300signatories.

Asrecentlyas2012,scientistsfeltitwasnecessarytoissueaCambridgeDeclarationonConsciousness,whichstatedthat“theweightofevidenceindicatesthathumansarenotuniqueinpossessingtheneurologicalsubstratesthatgenerateconsciousness”.
