MothersDayasitisobservedintheUnitedStatesstartedinthe1850swithAnnJarvis,aWestVirginiawomanwhoheld“MothersWorkDays”topromotehealthandhygiene(卫生)athomeandintheworkplace.DuringtheCivilWar,Jarvisorganizedwomentoimprovesanitaryconditionsforsoldiersonbothsides,aandafterthewarshebecameapeacemaker,furtheringthecausebybringingtogethermothersofUnionandConfederatesoldiersandpromotingaMothersDayholiday.

Jarvissworkinspiredanother19th-centurywoman,JuliaWardHowe.In1870Howepublishedher“MothersDayProclamation”,whichenvisionedthedaynotasappreciationofmothersbytheirchildrenbutasanopportunityforwomentoexercisetheircollectivepowerforpeace.HowestartedholdingannualMothersDaycelebrationsinBoston,herhometown,butafteraboutadecadeshestoppedfootingthebillandthetraditionfadedaway.

ItwasJarvissdaughterAnnawhosucceededingettingMothersDayrecognizedasanationalholiday.Afterhermotherdied,inMay1905,AnnastartedholdingyearlyceremonyontheanniversaryandconductingatirelessPRcampaigntohavethedaymadeaholiday.In1908shesucceededinenlistingthesupportofJohnWanamaker,thePhiladelphiadepartmentstoremagnateandadvertisingpioneer,andby1912WestVirginiaandafewotherstateshada
