Abstract.Whilethecomplexityof21st-centurydemandshaspromotedpedagogical
approachestofostercomplexcompetencies,apersistentgapremainsbetweenin-classlearning
activitiesandindividualizedlearningorassessmentpractices.Toaddressthisgap,studieshave
exploredtheuseofAI-generatedcharactersinlearningandassessment.Onesuchattemptis
scenario-basedassessment(SBA),atechniquethatnotonlymeasuresbutalsofostersthe
developmentofcompetenciesthroughouttheassessmentprocess.SBAintroducessimulated
agentstoprovideanauthenticsocial-interactionalcontextallowingfortheassessmentof
competency-basedconstructswhilemitigatingtheunpredictabilityofreal-lifeinteractions.
RecentadvancementsinmultimodalAI,suchastext-to-videotechnology,allowtheseagentsto
beenhancedtoAI-generatedcharacters.Thisexplanatorymixed-methodstudyinvestigates
howlearnersperceivedtheAIcharacterstakingtheroleofmentorandteammatesinanSBA
mirroringthecontextofperformingacollaborativescienceinvestigation.Specifically,we
examinedtheLikertscaleresponsesof56highschoollearnersperceptionoftheAIcharacters,
intermsoftrust,socialpresence,andeffectiveness.Wealsoanalyzedtherelationshipsbetween
thesefactorsandtheirimpactontheintentiontoadoptAIcharactersforfuturelearn
