easyaccesstohealthyfoods.OneorganizationinWashington,
however,istryingtohelsofonesuchneighborhoodcreate
theirownnutritionoasis.
InWashingtonshistoricLeDroitParkneighborhood,findingfreshfoodthatis
affordablecanbechallenging.Aboutathirdofitsresidentsliveinpoverty,while
thenearestgrocerystoreismorethan1.5kilometersaway.Butacommunity
farmistryingtoresolveitbyprovidingfood,aswellaseducationthrough
variousprogramsonfoodproduction,healthyeatingandenvironmental
sustainability.
Notonlydotheyknowhowtogrow
theirownfood,westartfromseedto
harvesttoweeding,composting,said
AnitaAdalja,thefarmsmanager.
Thereareworkshopsoncanningfood
preservation,beekeeping,herbalism,
healthandnutrition.Sonotonlydo
theygettoeducatethemselvesonthat
processoffoodsystem,butwealso
distributeupto15lbs[6.8kilograms]ofproduce[perweek,perfamily].
Since2007,CommonGoodCityFarmhastaughtmorethan1,100residentsin
itsworkshops,engagedmorethan2,000schoolchildrenandrecruitedmore
than2,500volunteers.FarmmanagerAdaljasaidthatin2013,thefarm
providedmorethan2,200kilograms[5,200pounds]offreshfruitsand
vegetablestothecommunity.
AtCommonGoodwetriedtostickto85-15,so85percentofthefoodwegrow
aredistributedwithinthecommunity,then15percentweselltolocal
restaurantsandamobilefarmersmarketthatcomesonceaweek,shesaid.
