LOSANGELES—ThereisagrowingtrendinU.S.schoolstore-thinkthe

waystudentsaredisciplinedforbadbehavior,includingfinding

alternativestopunishmentssuchasout-of-schoolsuspensions.InLos

Angeles,acitywithoneofthelargestschooldistrictsinthecountry,

changesindisciplinepoliciesarealreadyaffectingstudents.

InapredominantlyHispanicneighborhoodknownforitspovertyandgangs,

growingupcanough.That’sespeciallytrueforGarfieldHighSchoolstudent

MarcoAntonioAguilar.

“Myfreshmanyear,everythingwentbad.Ihatedtheschool,”hesaid.

Aguilarsayshehadthewrongfriends,oftenskippedschoolandevengotinto

fights.Theschoolsuspendedhimandhealmosthadtogotoaschoolfor

problemstudents.Butatalkwithhismomwokehimup.

“Shewasalwaysthereforme.Shecookedforme.Soformetowastemytime

atschool,thatwasn’tfairforher,andbeingasinglemomthat’sevenmoresad

forherformetobemessingaroundlikethat.Whatalsosparkedthefiremore

waswiththehelpoftheteachersIreceived,andknowingthattheydidcare

aboutme,theschooldidreallyhelpme,”Aguilarrecalls.

Lookingforalternatives

GarfieldHighSchoolPrincipalJoseHuertadoesnotbelieveinsuspensions.

“Youdon’thavetosuspendkid.Itdoesn’tgetyouanywhere.It’snoteven

expensive,it’sverysimple,connectwithstudents,”hesaid.

WhenhefirstarrivedatGarfieldHigh

morethanfouryearsago,thedropout

ratewasmorethan50percent,with

closeto700suspensionsayear.He

saysmostofthesuspensionswerefor

minorbehavioralproblemsknownas

“willfuldefiance.”
