AsofVTK40,vtkAttributeDataandit’ssubclasses(vtkScalars,vtkVectors,vtkNormals,vtkTCoords,
vtkTensors)willbedeprecated.ThisdoesnotmeanthatVTKwillnolongersupportattributes.Instead,all
attributesandfieldswillberepresentedbyvtkDataArrayoroneofit’ssubclasses.Thisdocumentsprovides
informationaboutwhytherechangesweremade,whentheywillbecomepartofVTKandwhatusersand
developerscandotomodifytheircodetobecompatiblewiththecomingrelease.
1Why
OneoftheimportantimprovementsinVTK40istheuniformhandlingofattributesandfields.Asofnext
release,itwillbemucheasiertoworkwithfielddata(seeFieldDataChanges).Oneofthechangesmade
involvedstoringattributesinthefielddataandtreatingthemasanyotherfield.Now,wheneveranattribute
(vtkScalarsetc...)isaddedtothepointorcelldata,thedataarray(vtkDataArray)whichisnormallyhandled
underthehoodbytheattributedataitractedandaddedtothefielddata.Thismakesmanipulatingattributes
bydirectlymodifyingthecorrespondingarrayspossibleandveryeasy.Thebiggestadvantageofthisisthat
theinterfaceofallattributesandfieldsisnowuniform.Forexample,tomodifyatupleofanyattribute(or
field),onecanusetheSet/GetTuple()pair,insteadofusingadifferentpair(Set/GetScalar,Set/GetVector,
Set/GetTensoretc...)foreachattribute.Furthermore,mostofthecodewhichhadtotreatattributesspecially
cannowbereplacedwithcodewhichsimplyprocessesallfieldsthesameway.

ThechangesmentionedabovewillbepartoftheCVStreeasofNovember1,2001andwillbepartofthenext
(4.0)release.
3ImpactonUsersandDevelopers
WiththeremovalofvtkAttributeData,it’ssubclassesandsomerelatedfilters,someprograms/filterswillhave
tobemodified.Mostofthesechangesarerelativelysimple.Forexample,
