TheriseofthenationalistmovementinMalawiMawlawisnationalistmovementdatesbacktotheendofthenineteenthCentury.Themostfamousisthe1915J.Chirenboueuprising.TheoutbreakofthefirstWorldWar,manypeoplewereforcedintonyasaland.Butthecolonialgovernmentagainstthefamilyofthedeceasedrefusedtograntpension.ChilembweleadershipAfricanspetitionofprotest.InJanuary191523organizedmassattackwhitemanor,seizethearmory.Soon,theuprisingtroopswassuppressed.Chirenbouedied.

IndependentMalawiBandaledtheMalawiCongressPartyadvocatedbyalegalstruggleandNonViolenceforcedtheBritishcolonialauthorities.InMay1961firstgeneralelectionsNyasalandMalawiCongresspartywins,Banda,astheBritishcolonialgovernmentminister.InFebruary1963,Nyasalandwasgrantedinternalself-government,theprimeministerBanda.In196312monthsofnonfederaldisintegration.NyasalandgainedindependenceinJuly6,1964,renamedtheRepublicofMalawi,stillremainintheCommonwealth,Bandabecamethepresident.1971presidentofthetenureofoffice.AftertheindependenceofMawlawi,theforeignpolicyoffreedomtochooseallianceandneutrality.
