Yetformostofthetwentiethcentury,thescienceofarchaeology—
dedicatedtouncoveringandstudyingoldculturalartifacts—wasfaced
withseriousproblemsandlimitationsinBritain.
First,manyvaluableartifactswerelosttoconstructionprojects.The
growthofBritainspopulation,especiallyfromthe1950son,spurredalot
ofnewconstructioninBritishcities,towns,andvillages.Whiledigging
foundationsfornewbuildings,thebuildersoftenuncovered
archaeologicallyvaluabites.Usually,however,theyproceededwith
theconstructionanddidnotpreservetheartifacts.Many
archaeologicallypreciousartifactswerethereforedestroyed.
Second,manyarchaeologistsfeltthatthefinancialsupportfor
archaeologicalresearchwasinadequate.Formostofthetwentieth
century,archaeologywasfundedmostlythroughgovernmentfundsand
grants,whichallowedarchaeologiststoinvestieahandfulofthemost
