    systems.Theaimofthesewastoachieveamoreaccuratecalculationofproductcosts.

    However,itsoonbecameapparentthattheinformationthathadbeenproducedforactivity

    basedcostinghadmuchwiderusethanjustcalculatingthecostperunitofaproductor

    service.

    Activity-basedmanagement(ABM)canbedefinedastheentiresetofactionsthatcanbe

    takenonaterinformedbasisusingABCinformation.Theaimistoachievethesamelevel

    ofoutputwithlowercosts.

    STAGESINABM

    TheinitialstagesinABMarethesameasforABC,sotheseshouldbefamiliarfromearlier

    studies:

    1.Identifytheactivitiesthattheorganisationperforms

    2.Calculatethecostofeachactivity

    3.Identifytheactivitycostdriverforeachactivity.

    Identifyingtheactivities

    Organisationsperformhundreds,ifnotthousands,ofdifferentactivities.Itwouldnotbe

    feasible,orevenbeneficial,toidentifyeveryactivitythattheorganisationperforms–so

    judgmentwillneedtobeusedtoidentifythesignificantactivities;perhapsbasedonthe

    amountoftimethatisspentperformingthemorbasedontheexpectedcost.

    Someorganisationsmaytrytodefineonlyhigh-levelactivitiestokeepthenumberof

    activitiesdefinedtosthan30,whileotherorganisationsmaydefinemuchmoredetailed

    activitylists.Theseactivitiesmaybesummarisedinanactivitydictionary.
