17.1Introduction

Foranadhesiveorsealantbondtobeuseful,itnotonlymustwith-

standthemechanicalforcesthatareactingonit,butitmustalsoresist

theelementstowhichitisexposedduringservice.Thus,oneofthe

mostimportantcharacteristicsofanadhesivejointorsealantisits

endurancetotheoperatingenvironment.Thisenduranceisalso

referredtoasthejoint’spermanenceordurability.Strengthandper-

manenceareinfluencedbymanycommonenvironmentalelements.

Theseincludehighandlowtemperatures,moistureorrelativehu-

midity,chemicalfluids,andoutdoorweathering.Table17.1summa-

rizestherelativeresistanceofvariousadhesivetypestocommonop-

eratingenvironments.

Theeffectofsimultaneousexposuretobothmechanicalstressanda

chemicalenvironmentisoftenmoreseverethanthesumofeachfactor

takenseparately.Mechanicalstress,elevatedtemperatures,andhigh

relativehumiditycanbeafatalcombinationforcertainadhesivesand

sealantsifalloccuratthesametime.Addtothisthepossiblecyclic

effectsofeachfactor,andonecaneasilyseewhyitisimportantto

understandtheeffectsofenvironmentonthejoint.
