Abstract—Opticalsignalprocessingbringstogethervarious

fieldsofopticsandsignalprocessing—namely,nonlineardevices

andprocesses,analoganddigitalsignals,andadvanceddatamodu-

lationformats—toachievehigh-speedsignalprocessingfunctions

thatcanpotentiallyoperateatthelinerateoffiberopticcom-

munications.Informationcanbeencodedinamplitude,phase,

wavelength,polarizationandspatialfeaturesofanopticalwaveto

achievehigh-capacitytransmission.Werevisitadvancesinthekey

enablingtechnologiesthatledtorecentresearchinopticalsig-nal

processingfordigitalsignalsthatareencodedinoneormoreof

thesedimensions.Variousopticalnonlinearitiesandchromatic

dispersionhavebeenshowntoenablekeysub-systemapplicationsFig.1.Recentadvancesandenablingtechnologiesforopticalsignal
