4.1Introduction

Thetestingofadhesivesandsealantsisacomplexsubjectbecause

therearemanyparametersthatcanaffectthetestresult.Interactions

oftheadhesiveandadherendareoftenobscure.Thejointdesignand

typeofloadstronglyinfluencethefinalstressdistribution.Thepar-

ametersbywhichthetestisconducted,suchasstrainrate,temper-

ature,andenvironmentalconditions,alsohaveastrongimpactonthe

testresults.

Althoughcomplex,testingisanextremelyimportantsubjectsince

onecannotreliablypredictthestrengthoftheadhesivebondbased

solelyoncharacteristicsoftheadhesive,substrate,andthejointde-

sign.Todeterminethestrengthofthejoint,onemustresorttotesting.

Throughtestingthemanyfactorsthatcanaffectthestrengthofthe

jointcanbemeasured.Sometimesitisdifficulttoseparatethevari-

abthatcontroljointstrength,butatleastthroughtesting,wehave

avehicletoprovideaquantitativeapproximation.Standardtests,

suchasASTMtests,areveryusefulforcomparinganddetermining

theconsistencyofmaterialsandprocesses.Theyaresvaluablein

accuratelypredictingthestrengthofspecificproductionjoints.Usu-

ally,prototypetestsmustbedesignedforthispurpose.
