Theprotocoloperatesweenamobilestationandaterminalequipmentandallowsanumberof
simultaneoussessionsoveranormalserialasynchronousinterface.Thispermits,forexample,
sendingofSMSfromtheterminalequipmentwhileadataconnectionisinprogress.
TheGSM07.10specificationdefinesthreeoperationmodes:basic,advancedwithouterrorrecovery
andadvancedwitherrorrecovery.Onlyasubsetofbasicmodeoperationswereincludedinthe
implementeddriver,becausethedriverwasprimarilymadefortheMC35modulewhich
doesntsupporttheadvancedmodesandalltheoperationsofthebasicmode.
Thedrivercreatesanumberofvirtualserialportsandhandthecommunicationweenthem
andtheactualserialline.ThereareatleastthreewaystoimplementvirtualserialportsforLinux:
pseudoterminals,ownserialportdriverinthekernelandanuserspaceserialport(USSP)driver.
ThedriverwasimplementedasanUSSPdriver.Thisallowsthedrivercodetoberunintheuser-
space,whiletheUSSPkernelmoduleimplementedbyPatrickvandeLagewegandRogierWolff
transferscallsweenthedriverandthekernel.Anuserspaceprogramismoresimpleto
implementandtodebug,butisalittleslowerthanadriverinthekernelspacewouldbe.
