Inthenameofsocialdistancing,thisyearsgraduationceremonieshavebecomedifferent.However,onetraditionhascontinuedtoexist—thesquaregraduationcap,commonlyknownasamortarboardhat.

Europeanscholars(学者)havebeenwearingcapssincethefirstuniversitieswerestartedinthe11thcentury,buttheirearlycapslookedmorelikeAmeliaEarhartspilotcapthanthesquarecapsweknowtoday.Earlyscholarsfirstusedthepileus(伞状帽).Bythe14thcentury,pileuscapswerebecomingtaller,similartoamodernchefshatbutshorter.Thisstyle,the“pileusrotundus”，wasusedmainlybyuniversitystudentsstudyinglaw,medicine,andscience.

Bythemiddleofthe16thcentury,anewcapstylemade_wavesinuniversities:the“pileusquadratus”，asoft,squarecapthatrequiredlessmaterialtomake.Soonthetwostyles,roundandsquare,becamesymbolsofdifferentstatuses.OnecenturylaterattheUniversityofOxford,under-graduatesworetheolder,roundedcaps,whilethosewithhigherdegreeswereallowedtowearthepileusquadratus.

ThefirstAmericancollegeswerestartedinthemid-1600s,andtheirclassstructuresanddegreerequirementsfollowedfamousEnglishuniversities.AndEuropeanscholarlytraditionswerekept—includingideasofproperacademicdress.Today,Americangraduatesinlaw,medicine,andphilosophystillwearroundedcaps,butundergraduatesalwaysusethesquarecap.

Althoughthesquarehathasacenturies-oldhistory,newcaptraditionsarepoppingupacrosstheUS.About100yearsago,studentsbeganmovingtheirtassels(流苏)fromtherightsideoftheircaptotheleft.Tothisdaytherearenoformalrulesonwherethetasselshouldbeplaced,buttheactofmovingitfromonesidetotheotherhasbeenwidelypopular.
