intheWorldMarketThecausesofthecurrencycrisisthateruptedinThailandinthesummerof1997andthenspreadtoneighboringcountries,arevariousanddifferforeachcountry.ForKoreaandJapanthemainproblemspointedoutascausesarethestructuralweaknesses,especiallyintheirfinancialsystems.ForthepastseveralyearsbothcountrieshaveexperiencedrecessionsandJapan’sgrowth,inparticular,hasbeenverymodestsincetheearly1990s.Incontrast,theSoutheastAsiancountriessuchasThailand,Indonesia,thePhilippinesandMalaysiawereenjoyingrapideconomicgrowthbuthaddevelopedlargeexternaldeficitsandalsosufferedfromextremelyfragilefinancialsectors.However,China,HongKong,TaiwanandSingapore,consideredthegreatChineseeconomicbloc,havebeenenjoyingrapidgrowthandverystrongexternalpositionsthatincludelargetradesurplusesandverysizableforeignexchangereserves.
