ConsiderAI’sappetiteforenergyfirst.TheInternationalEnergyAgency(IEA)reckonsthatelectricityconsumptionby

datacentrescouldasmuchastripleinthenextfiveyears.Evenifenergyusagesoars,though,thebaseisstilllow.Datacentres

todayaccountforabout1.5%oftheworld’selectricityconsumption—andthevastmajorityofthatisduetostreaming,social

mediaandonlineshopping,notAI.Moreover,someofAI’selectricityusewillhelpwithgreeningtheeconomy.AIexcelsat

identifyingcomplexpatterns,dealingwithgiantdatasetsandperfectingsystems,allofwhichcanhelpreduceemissions.AIis

alreadyhelpingimprovetheefficiencyofelectricalgrids(电网),cutfueluseinshippingandspototherwiseinvisibleleaksof

methane,apotentgreenhousegas.

Thetaskforpolicymakersandindustrybossesistomaximizesuchbenefitswhileminimizingtheclimateimpacts.The

firstistorethinkhowdatacentresoperate.TheIEAnotesthatbeingabletoshiftworkloadsbetweendifferentdatacentresat

differenttimescouldreducestrainandhelpbalanceenergygrids.Moreflexibledatacentreswouldalsobeabettermatchfor
