1.INTRODUCTION

Whilemanypeoplemighthavethoughtthatallthepossibilitiesfordevelopmentintheareaof

conveyortechnologyhadbeenexhausted,atotallynewsystemoftransportingbulkmaterialhas

nowbeencreated,knownasRopeCon.

Theneedtotransportlargevolumesofbulkmaterialoverlongdistancesisveryquicklyconfronted

withecologicalandeconomicbarriers.

Thebest-knownmeansoftransportinglargevolumesofbulkmaterialoverlongdistancesinclude:

§Rail:

Onlyeconomicinthecaseofverylargedistances,onlylowgradientspossible,unsuitable

fordifficultterrain.Loadingandunloadingterminalsrequired

§Truck:

Personnel-intensive,highdustandnoiseemissions,extremelyhighenergyconsumption,

unsuitablefordifficultterrain.

§Ropeway:

Discontinuousmaterialfeed,intermittentconveying,onlysuitablefortransportingbulk

materialuptoapprox.500t/h.

§Conventionalconveyor:

Highenergyconsumptionduetoflexingoftheconveyorbelt,inmountainousterrainonly

possiblewithbridges,cuttingsortunnels.
