Increasinganindividual’squalityoflifeviatheirintelligent

homeThehypothesisofthisprojectis:cananindividual’s

qualityoflifebeincreasedbyintegrating“intelligent

technology”intotheirhomeenvironment.Thishypothesisis

verybroad,andhencetheresearcherswillinvestigateitwith

regardtovarious,potentiallyover-lapping,sub-sectionsofthe

population.Inparticular,theprojectwillfocusonsub-sections

withhealth-careneeds,becauseitisbelievedthatthesesub-

sectionswillreceivethegreatestbenefitfromthisenhanced

approachtohousing.Tworesearchquestionsflowfromthis

hypothesis:whatarethehealth-careissuesthatcouldbe

improvedvia“intelligenthousing”,andwhatarethe

technologicalissuesneedingtobesolvedtoallow“intelligent

housing”tobeconstructed?Whileasmallnumberofinitiatives

exist,outsideCanada,whichclaimtoinvestigatethisarea,none

hastheglobalvisionofthisarea.Worktendstobeinsmallareas

withonlyalimitedideaofhowtheindividualpiecescontribute

towardsagreatergoal.Thisprojecthasaverystrongsenseof

whatitistryingtoattempt,andbelievesthatwithoutthisglobal

directiontheotherinitiativeswillfailtoaddressthelarge

importantissuesdescribedwithinvariouspartsofthisproposal,

andthatwiththecorrectglobaldirectionthesumoftheparts

willproducemuchgreaterrewardsthantheindividual

components.Thisnewfieldhasmanyparallelswiththefieldof

businessprocessengineering,wheremanyproductsfaildueto

onlyconsideringasub-setoftheissues,typicallythetechnology

subset.Successfulprojectsandimplementationsonlystarted

flowwhenpeoplestartedtorealizethataholisticapproachwas

essential.Thisholisticrequirementalsoappliestothefieldof

“smarthousing”;ifwegenuinely
