Innormalmanualflight,trimmingoftheaircraftmaybeneededaboutallthree

axesusingtheaileron,rudderandelevatortrimcontrols.

Howeverinauto-flight,pitchcontrolisgenerallyconfinedtochangesinpitch

trimthatareonlyrequiredbychangingspeed,configurationandweight.Such

automatictrimsystemsusuallyemployaseparatepitchtrimservomotorwhich

operatesinparallelwiththeservomotoroperatedbytheautopilotpitchchannel.

Automatic(autopilot)pitchtrimisusuallylimitedtoabouthalftherateused

whenmanualtrimming.Inaircraftthataretrimmedusingavariableincidence

tailne,aseparatetrimservomotormaybeusedtomovethetailne.

Inaircraftthatusehydraulicmotorstoadjustthetailne,incidenceisadjusted

bycontroloverthehydraulicpressuretotheactuators.

Intheeventofautopilotpitchtrimmalfunction,theautopilotcanbe

immediatelydisconnectedbypressingtheautopilotdisconnectbuttononeach

controlwheel,orbyoperatingthepitchtrimswitchalsolocatedonthecontrol

wheel.

Theautopilotwillalsodisengageifthepilotappliespitchcontrolopposingthe

(runaway)changeoftrim.

Anothercut-outswitchfortheautopilotpitchtrimsystemmayalsobeprovided

onaspecifictrimcontrolpanel.
