Abstract
Weconstructanews-basedindexofderegulationfortheUnitedStatesfrom1960through2025
usingAItosemanticallyclassifynewspaperarticles.Wedistinguisharticlesdiscussingderegu-
lationfromthosediscussingincreasedregulation,assigningintensityscoresthatreflectboththe
centralityofderegulatorycontentandwhetherarticlesdiscussadvocacy,proposals,orenacted
measures.HumanvalidationconfirmsstrongagreementbetweenAIandhumanclassifications.
