RFCM 101: Introduction to Modulation Technical data is subject to change Copyright@2003 Agilent Technologies Printed on Dec. 4, 2002 5988-8496ENA 1 Transmitting Information… Analog or Digital Modify a Signal Modulate Detect the Modifications Demodulate Any reliably detectable change in signal characteristics can carry information 2 Signal Characteristics to Modify (As a Function of Time) Amplitude Frequency or Phase Both Amplitude and Phase In order to put an information signal (i.e. voice) on a carrier signal, we can vary its amplitude, frequency or phase according to the information-bearing signal. The difference between analog and digital modulation is the information signal. In both schemes, either the amplitude, frequency or phase (or a combination) of the carrier signal is varied. In analog modulation, the parameter of the carrier varies according to a continuous analog information signal, whereas in digital modulation, the parameter (amplitude, frequency or phase) varies according to discrete digital information. Amplitude modulation (AM) has a varying amplitude but constant frquency. It is simple to design and implement. AM produces two sidebands, on either side of the carrier, separated by the modulating signals frequency.
