Chapter 11Technical Analysis: Timing Indicators MOVING AVERAGES A moving average is a simple mathematical manipulation of raw data that provides up-to-date or moving indications of market activity. Many analysts have found that a single moving average is not accurate enough to use as a timing device, particularly in choppy markets. Moving average signals are popular among many money managers and speculators. The stochastic indicator(SI) was popularized by Dr. George Lane. The relative strength indicator (RSI) is essentially similar to the SI. The difference is that SI has two values while RSI has only one. The second SI value is derived by computing a moving average of the first SI value. Wilder’s Relative Strength Index RSI uses a mathematical formula to determine market strength, weakness, probable low or probable high.
