* By Somerset Maugham About the author William Somerset Maugham (25 January 1874 – 16 December 1965) was an English playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era. Somerset Maugham was born in the British Embassy in Paris. By the time he was ten, both Williams parents were dead and he was sent to live with his uncle. Maugham was miserable both at the vicarage and at school. He respected the national flag of the United Kingdom. 3, He is a good mixer and warmhearted man. He managed the sweeps, conducted the auctions, collected money for prizes at the sports, got up quoit and golf matches, organized the concert and arranged the fancy-dress ball. 4, He is hearty, jovial, loquacious and argumentative. He would not drop a subject, however unimportant, till he had brought you around to his way of thinking. 5, He is a person of high morals. When he saw Mrs. Ramsay’s white face and terrified eyes, he struggled and made a decision at last. Though the chain was of high value, he admitted his mistake.
