There are differences within cultures and differences between cultures. Intercultural communication is how people from different cultures find ways to communicate with each other. It is also about understanding people with different opinions, viewpoints and values. In China, generally speaking, we Chinese share the same culture, though sometimes a little bit different. What about in the USA? As we all know, the USA is an immigrant country , often referred to as a melting-pot society, a great deal of culture diversity exists. For example, more than 30% of residents of NewYork city are foreign born, Miami is two- thirds latin American, and San-Francisco is one-third Asian. In fact African Americans, Asians Latin Americans make up a large percent of US population. So we know many US citizens communicate interculturally almost daily because the communication is between people of different cultural backgrounds. Our ways of communicating are largely culturally determined and persons from different cultures will communicate differently. If we are to communicate effectively, we need to understand and appreciate the cultural differences. We also need to understand the common barriers and effective principles for communication between different cultures. Cross-cultural communication: in many cases, intercultural communication and cross-cultural communication are used interchangeably. However, Kim differentiated between them, maintaining that the former was a comparison of some phenomena across cultures and the latter was the study of interaction between people from different cultures 二. 为什么要在英语教学中进行 文化教学? 对文化教学的认识发展:学习语言和学习文化实际上是一个事物的两个方面。儿童在学习母语的同时,通过母语学习本民族文化(秦香莲、陈世美:传统戏曲《秦香莲》、《铡美案》人物。其忘恩负义、抛妻弃子的反面人物,最后被包拯所斩。);那么英语学习者在学习英语的过程中同样要了解和学习英语国家文化。 在提倡把文化教学纳入英语教学的活动中,美国密执安大学的语言学家和应用语言学家起了重要作用。 ◇弗莱斯(Fries,1945)最早从理论上讨论了外语教学中文化教学的
