In the age of information, advertisements have infiltrated into all walks of life and become an important source of information as well as an indispensable part of our life in the modern world. Especially after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization, a great number of foreign commodities have been introduced into the Chinese market. Thus it is necessary to set up a good image of and create an international reputation for products through the process of advertising. Foreign merchants always like translating good English advertisements into Chinese ones. To achieve the same advertising effects, they adopt many ingenious methods. Because puns are widely used in advertisements, having some knowledge of translating puns in English advertisements is an effective way to translate other advertising languages. The definition of pun is the use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more meanings or different associations, or the use of two or more words of the same or nearly the same sound with different meanings, so as to produce a humorous effect.1 By using puns, advertisements will be easily remembered by the readers. In addition, filled with wit and humor, puns help the advertised products win favor from readers. After telling the rhetoric functions of puns, this thesis cites applications of puns in English advertisements form several aspects, such as in terms of vocabulary, in terms of grammar and in terms of culture. The translation of puns in advertisements is often considered to be very difficult. The translator must keep both in double meanings of a pun and the style of the advertisements in mind.? Ⅱ. Application of Puns in English Advertisements ?? Puns are widely used in English advertisements.
