Introduction to the author Thomas Hardy, last and one of the greatest of Victorian novelists, was born in Dorset on June2, 1840, in the centre of the Wessex country which later figured in his works. Both his mother and his father, who was a builder, came of Dorset stock, and Thomas early learned to love the country ways and speech around him. He was educated at home until he was eight, and then in the village schools and in the nearby town of Dorchester. At sixteen he was apprenticed to a local architect. In 1962 he left for London to continue his work as an architect, an occupation he practiced until his marriage. As a realist, Hardy felt that art should describe and comment upon actual situations, such as the heavy lot of the rural laborers and the bleak lives of oppressed women. Hardy’s works reflected the tremendous changes and people’s miserable lives especially the women’s lives in social economic, politics, morals, custom, etc after the invasion of industrial capital to the British villages. In Hardy’s novels female principals are less different from one another than his male principals. The temperamental capriciousness of Hardy’s heroines arises from an instinctive obedience to emotional impulse without sufficient corrective control of reason. Hardy’s attitudes towards women were complex because of his own experiences. Certainly the latter stages of his own marriage to Emma Lavinia Gifford must have contributed much to his somewhat equivocal attitudes. On the one hand, Hardy praises female endurance, strength, passion, and sensitivity; on the other, he depicts women as meek, vain, plotting creatures of mercurial moods.? Hardy’s great achievements as a novelist lie in his?“Novels of Character and Environment” which secure his momentous place in English literature. They are Under the Greenwood?(1872), Far From the Madding Crowd?(1874), The Return of the Nat
