The middle Eastern Bazaar Background information About the text: This text is taken from the book Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation Pieces for Overseas Students. It was prepared by L.A. Hill and D.J. May and published by the Oxford University Press in 1962. The author in his introduction states: “This book is intended for students preparing for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Examination(剑桥熟练英语证书考试), and for students in the top class of secondary schools or in the first year of a university course”. Middle East:an area comprising the countries of southwest Asia and northeast Africa. The region has been the continuing scene of political and economic turmoil. It includes Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Turkey, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia Bazaar: an oriental market-place consisting of a street lined with shops and stalls, especially one in the Middle East, where a variety of goods is sold. The word perhaps comes from the Persian word.
