Abstract The Catcher in the Rye was a novel published by American writer J. D. Salinger in 1951. Salinger record the process from Pencey Prep to New York with a 16 years old American high school students of the first person perspective, while he had seen and heard and wandering thoughts. The novel described in detail the whole process of the spirit break of Holden, the protagonist. This thesis contains four chapters. In the chapter one, it mainly represents the content of Salinger and his writing background. The United States is in a peculiar historical development time after the Second World War. Thanks to the fund from the Second World War, a mass of American families become middle class. In the chapter two, it shows an introduction of the novel. It describe the society situations at present and psychological attitude through the experience of Holden, finally, lead to the spirit break of Holden in the entire process. In the chapter three, the spiritual progress did not follow the footsteps of economic development. They were called ‘The silence of 50s’. Some teenagers resist the society in negative ways (mainly through the alcohol, drugs, intercourse, gregarious and some decadent ways); they were called ‘beat generation’. This thesis will analyze the Holden’s personal characters and various factors of the moral landslide. Nowadays, there are many similar situations in China. In the chapter four, it mainly shows the realistic meaning of the novel to the Chinese youth. At present, even though there are increasing phenomena of moral landslide, more and more lure in society, People still should try to keep their own mind in their spirit homes. The Catcher in the Rye is a great mirror for Chinese youth. As the generation of young people, standing on the cross of the history, the high speed development of material society is a real test to the spirit world.
