Literature Review
The novel Invisible Man addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans in the early twentieth century, including nationalism, individuality and reconstruction of personal identity, etc. The famous black writer Ralph Ellison employs lots of metaphors in his novel to reflect the dilemma which the blacks confront in American society.
Since the publication of the novel, there have been lots of studies on its writing techniques and the theoretical and practical significance. Scholars interested in this novel have published their research findings on the use of metaphor, symbolism, and satire in the novel, which are of great importance to further study of the novel.
Some scholars have been studying the blues-based jazz used and reflected by Ralph Ellison in his novel. Not only does Ralph Ellison’ s writing reflect his background as a musician who played European classics and Southwestern blues-based jazz, and whose fiction reflect the aesthetics of these worlds, but also his work reveals a vital connection to religion. It is OMeallys contention that Ralph Ellison viewed the Negro spiritual and sermon, with their frequent namings of the troubles of the world, as never more than two steps from the blues—Ellisons model and metaphor for American culture. Ellison blended the two forms in an aesthetic and philosophy of transcendence that needed both to ring true. The spiritual dimension that always underlies his project as a writer is explored and developed. (Robert 2004).
Many scholars interpret the novel by analyzing the mythical pattern of it. Scholar Yi Lijun made use of the African mythology “Tarbaby” to study the novel, combining the “Tarbaby” with the metaphorical pattern of Invisible Man.
