Box 300 200, 70442 Stuttgart,Germany) Abstract: Thereare three fundamentally different fuel injection systems established on the market , hence, it is necessary that different nozzle variants are designed to the system specific require- ments. That is why the aspects of pressure capability, dead volumeand tribology areassessed dif- ferently according to the application of the nozzle. Current and future emission limits require that further intensive development be undertaken on the seat and spray geometry of all those nozzle types. By taking calculated measures, alter- ations in the mechanism of interaction between the geometry, internal flow and spray can be made, that result in the improvement of engine behaviour. The spray hole, as theprecision geometry featureof thenozzle body, defines the spray char- acteristics and thus theemissions of theengine. Thespray characteristics of the nozzleare specif-i cally influenced by the micro- geometry of the spray holes. The parameters of the spray- hole (diameter, length, inlet edge geometry, form and micro surface) work together for an optimal flow profile so that the injection spray requirements of theengine are met. The nozzle seat, as the precision geometry of the needle point, defines the dirft behaviour and varinance of thenozzle. Theseat line of standard nozzle migrate slowly towards the needletip during t
