The children who support Ralph want to set up a civilized and orderly society, while others would like to set up an autocratic and barbarous society. A war is launched against each other, which reveals the theme of evil of human nature. Ralph, Simon, Piggy and other characters in the novel have a rich symbolic significance, but there lies a huge irony behind the symbol that they represent. Ralph stands for reason, civilization and order, but finally he compromises to his instinct of bloodthirstiness and funk. Simon is the prophet in the text, but when he wants to tell the truth of the “beast”, he is killed as a “beast”, the truth is stifled by ignorance; a bespectacled fat, clumsy boy nicknamed Piggy represents the wisdom and science, but ultimately is killed barbarically by Jack’s gangs. The conch that stands for democracy, order and authority is smashed at last, tyranny and barbarism takes its place. This thesis aims to analyze the combination of the symbol and irony, which will help readers well understand the theme of the evil of the human beings. Key
