Dep artment of Pediatrics, inhua Hosp ital, Shanghai Second Medical University, Shanghai 200092, China = Abstract Objective To investigate the contents of various nutrients of human milk in Shanghai. Methods Human milk samples w ere collected from 120 lactating w omen living in three urban districts and one suburb of Shang hai. Contents of protein, fat , carbohydrate, calcium, manganese, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, chloride, iron, copper and zinc in human milk w ere measured. Dietary composition of the enrolled lactating women w as investigated. Results The milk protein, manganese, sodium, potassium, chloride, iron, copper in Shanghai w as higher than those of the reference value. Significant differences of t he above nutrients between the urban district and the suburb w ere present. The contents of fat, calcium and zinc in the breast milk w ere generally lower than these of the reference val ue. Differences were present between urban and suburb. Carbohydrates was similar to the reference value, no differ ence was found in urban and suburb. Phosphorus w as also similar to the reference value, difference was present be tw een urban and suburb. Conclusion The contents of fat, calcium and zinc in the breast milk are low in Shanghai, w hereas sodium and chloride are apparently high.
