Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Safety and Durability of China Ministry of Education, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China) Abstract: The impact resistance of different concrete filled steel tube sections under lateral impact loading is evaluated by using the finite element analysis based on ABAQUS. The different impact resistances and failure models are compared with each other. The results show that by increasing steel tube thickness, the impact resistance is obviously improved for a concrete filled steel tube that have an identical outer diameter, and that the impact resistance is also improved by using steel tubes to replace the core concrete to some extent. With the same steel ratio and concrete, the concrete filled steel tube section has the best impact resistance, compared with the hollow concrete filled steel tube section and other sections.
