Establishment of the Center for Monitoring and Assessment of Extreme Weather and Climate Events in Asia (CEEMA)
At the 3rd Session of the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) of WMO World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) in September 2009, a proposal for the establishment of the Center for Monitoring and Assessment of Extreme Weather and Climate Events in Asia in BCC was adopted. At the 15th Session of the Commission for Atmospheric Science (CAS-15) held in Incheon, ROK in November 2009, a WWRP document related to the establishment of the center was signed. In February 2010, Mr. Yan Hong, Deputy Secretary-General of WMO, wrote to BCC to officially confirm the establishment of the center. Its abbreviation English name is the Center for Extreme Events Monitoring in Asia(CEEMA).
The main objectives of the CEEMA are: (1) developing a systematic, integrated and continuous monitoring and assessment system for extreme weather and climate events in Asia; (2) setting up a database with high temporal and spatial resolution as inclusive as possible for the monitoring and identification of extreme events; (3) generating high-quality data for assessment, analysis and research to meet the needs for improved forecasts and disaster prevention.
