* 单元影视 My Fair Lady is a 1964 musical film adaptation of the Lerner and Loewe stage musical of the same name, based on the 1938 film adaptation of the original stage play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. Directed by George Cukor, the film depicts misogynistic (厌恶女人的) and arrogant phonetics professor Henry Higgins as he wagers (打赌) that he can take flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) and turn her Cockney accent into a proper English one, thereby making her presentable in high society. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. “Pygmalion” was about Henry Higgins, a professor of languages, who had a bet with a friend that he could take an uneducated flower girl, Eliza Poolittle, from the streets of London and teach her in three months how to pronounce upper class or Received Standard English. To win the bet she had to be accepted at an ambassador’s tea party as a duchess by other members of English Society. She made some mistakes to begin with but was a huge success and ready to fulfill her ambition to serve in a flower shop. Henry Higgins won his bet. But he did not realize that Eliza’s human reactions would be a complication to his experiment. He was shocked to find that she had emotions and opinions of her own. Eliza could not return to the life she had on the streets. In the film version, unlike the play, Henry Higgins falls in love with her and it is a mystery whether she returns his love or not.
