Reading guide for the PhD course in Responsible Conduct of Research MODULE 2: Authorship In this module, we focus on issues concerning rightful authorship(s), unrightful authorships, the Vancouver Guidelines (i.e. the ICMJE Recommendations) and good publication practices. If authorship disputes develop into serious conflicts and need external mediation/decision/advice, e.g., by the Practice Committee at University of Copenhagen, the ICMJE Recommendations will usually provide the framework for making decisions. A central issue for the module is therefore, what are the necessary and sufficient conditions for being an author and co-author according to the ICMJE Recommendations. Moreover, we will discuss how the individual researcher can work to avoid instances of scientific misconduct and questionable conduct in connection with authorship issues. Take home messages and intended learning outcomes: Students should know the basic principles of rightful authorship, and the basic principles for prevention of authorship disputes, and should be able to handle authorship disputes. Students should understand the ICMJE Recommendations for authorship. Students should be able to explain the described deviations from these guidelines and explain why such deviations constitute a problem both in regard to the researcher, the transparency of the research and, and more broadly, for the integrity of scientific literature. You should be careful to manage your own publications at all stages of the process. Clear written authorship/research plans can make your own life a lot easier. Be clear about your expectations regarding authorship issues towards collaborators. Be aware that situations may occur where your collaborators (in Denmark or abroad) are working under other rules and regulations when it comes to responsible conduct of research. Work to change the culture – but expect it to be a long haul. Assigned reading
