The courtyard in Lungshan Temple is chosen as the location for experimentation. Base on the analytical findings of ancient Chinese architecture sound field, Chen (2002) found that Nan-kaung music is more suitable to be played there as compare to the western music. But there is no unanimous response for reverberation time subjective perception research in the laboratory. On the other hand, traditional stringed and woodwind are the main instruments in Nan-kaung music and that result to the different sound production characteristics. This research further compare sound image characteristics between Chinese and western instruments. The method utilized in this research is to let the participants to listen to solo music of the eastern and western (both are dry sources) in an anechoic room for subjective sound image range (horizontal angle) judgment. This is done to seek required absolute threshold through the adjustment method as to examine apparent sound width of the sound image of eastern and western solo performance (the impression of listeners). The initial experiment result shows that the average subjective judgment on Chinese musical instrument is 76° (±33.8sd), and average of 87° (±30.9sd) for western musical instrument.
