Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION 1. IDENTIFICATION OF ROLE ROLE TITLE - NWT Wildlife Surveyor RESPONSIBLE TO - Living Landscape Monitoring Officer PURPOSE OF ROLE - To carry out surveys on NWT Reserves to help monitor wildlife and the effects of management BASED AT - A specific reserve as close to your home as possible 2. OVERALL PURPOSE OF ROLE To survey a variety of species using standard methodologies which over time will help us to gauge the success of habitat management. The majority of surveys are based on walking a set route and recording the species and numbers of the target species group. You will be required to survey on your own unless you ask a friend or relative to help. The main species groups we would like to survey are breeding birds, butterflies, dragonflies and plants. If you have a particular interest outside of these groups e.g. moths, amphibians and reptiles, bats, we would also be keen to hear from you. Periodically there may be opportunities to be involved in surveys for other species as part of wider studies on and away from reserves e.g. water voles. 3. MAIN TASKS To plan and map a suitable transect route. Help and advice will be given with this. Survey the transect as many times as necessary for each survey (usually no more than once a month) To submit your data on a regular basis 4. EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED Good identification skills. Experience of following standard methodology surveys helpful but not essential. Ability to follow detailed instructions. Ability to follow health and safety guidelines. Willingness to survey alone. 5. BENEFITS AND TRAINING OPPORTUNIITIES You will be helping to gather valuable wildlife and habitat information to ensure that NWT reserves are managed appropriately.
