It is the heart of the engine room; it can supply power for the vessel’s propulsion; boilers for producing steam; fresh water generator used to produce fresh water from seawater; air compressor to supply compressed air; steering gears for the control of the ship’s course. The modern improvement of control systems results in machinery space remaining unattended for long periods. That is UMS (Unattended Machinery Space). 2. The engine department.
