Progress of research on carbonate diagenesis. Earth Science Frontiers , 2009, 16( ) : 219231 Abstract: Carbonate diagenesis is one of the most active fields in sedimentology. The related research result s directly influence peoples understanding about the formation mechanisms of carbonate oil/ gas reservoirs and stratabounded deposits. In recent years, carbonate diagenesis has gotten prom inent achievements in many fields, including the follow ing aspect s. ( 1) Man has succeeded in precipit ating the dolomite w ith superstruc ture reflect ion under the conditions of bacterial sulfate reduct ion environment of sea water ( lagoon) at normal temperature. (2) Hydrothermal dolomitization as the main model becomes the focus of the study. eople come to an understanding that hydrothermal dolomite reservoirs, sedimentary exhalative ( SEDEX) bZn deposit s and M ississippi valley type ( MVT) of bZn deposits have similar formation mechanisms. They are all con trolled by t he tectonics (extensional or/ and strikeslip ( w rench) faults) and fluid flow . (3) More attention is being focused on the deepburial closedsystem dolom itization. Some dolomit izat ion of pract ical significance to the oil/ gas reservoir and to the stratabounded deposits mainly occurred in closed system, whic
