A b stract: The first imp lem en tation of fuzzy logic con tro ller in the literatu re app eared in 1977, wh ich show s
better p erform ance comp ared to veh icle actuated controller for a very simp lified intersection having two one
way streets ba sed on a simp le green tim e exten sion p rincip le. A fter that, fu rther developm ent is tak ing p lace
by adop ting fuzzy logic ba sed traffic signal con tro l for twoway single in tersection w ithout turn ing veh icles,
single intersection w ith all po ssib le movem ents, mu ltip le intersection s, p ha se sequence and tim e determ ina
tion, conge sted in tersection and network, etc. R esearch in fuzzy logic based traffic signal contro l is getting
in sp ired by the re su lts wh ich indicate better p erform ance comp ared to traditional traffic signal contro ls, sp e
cifically during heavy and uneven traffic volum e condition s. It can be exp ected that the fuzzy logic app roach
w ill not on ly contribute in the advancem en t of adap tive traffic signal con tro l but w ill also contribute sign ifi
can tly in the fu tu re app roach of tran sportation m anagem en t system ( TM S) by imp roving the p erform a
