D ep ar tment of Ep idemiology and B iostatistics , School of Public H ealth , Southeast University , N anj ing 210009, China Abstract Objective To evaluate the effect of a health education on treating tuberculosis ( TB) and relapse pre vention in patients. Methods A computerized literature search was carried out in CNKI ( Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) , Wanfang (Chinese) , PubMed, Elsevier and Embase databases to collect articles published from 2000 to 2010 concerning the effect of TB education in patients. The study typewas selfcontrol intervention study. Metaanalysis was performed to assess 15 outcomes of the intervention, including two aspects, the knowledge of TB and the behavior of patients during treatment. Fixed and random effect models were employed to combine results after a heterogeneity test, with rate difference (R ) used as the indicator of intervention effect. Results The analysis showed that the R for most outcomes were increased. Among them, the R for knowing the treatment of TB were increased by 81%, and the R for taking the medicine regularly were increased by 53%. Conclusions TB Health education is effective in changing knowledge and behavior in patients, which could make a promotion for controlling the spread of TB.
