For students, it’s now a commonplace to know that defining “Cultural Studies” is by no means an easy task. What is it? Is it a formal discipline? Is it anti-disciplinary or inter-disciplinary? If it is a discipline, what is its object of study? Does it have most in common with media and communication studies; historical scholarship; the social sciences; literary and film studies? What is its relationship to the broader research fields and public sphere (national culture, the cultural politics of aboriginality; multiculturalism, cultural globalization and Taiwan’s relationship with “Asia”, etc), effectively in Online resources? Then what distinctive modes of analysis can we employ here to help students participate in current debates on cultural politics? Links, issues tackled, reference essays will be provided in this course as a kind of useful introductory guide to Cultural Studies especially in Taiwan.
